Depending on the complexity of the matching network, it is possible that some areas of the Smith Chart cannot be reached or must not be entered as further transformation, for example, to 50Ω becomes impossible. These areas are called forbidden regions. The following figure shows an example of a forbidden region in the Smith Chart.
