1.3.7 SAMA5D2 Xplained Ultra Evaluation Kit: Building and Running the UART Bootloader with Serial Flash media applications
Downloading and building the application
To clone or download this application from Github,go to the main page of this repository and then click Clone button to clone this repo or download as zip file. This content can also be download using content manager by following these instructions
Path of the application within the repository is apps/mpu_uart_bootloader/
To build the application, refer to the following table and open the project using its IDE.

Setting up SAMA5D2 Xplained Ultra Evaluation Kit
Short jumper JP2 (DEBUG_DIS)
Connect the J14 Debug USB port on the board to the computer using a micro USB cable
Connect the J23 USB port on the board to the computer using a micro USB cable
Open BOOT_DIS JP9 jumper
Setting up the host script
Refer to Bootloader Host Script Help for setting up the btl_host.py utility used to send the application binary from host PC
Running the Application
Open the test application project test_app/firmware/sam_a5d2_xult.X in the IDE
Build the project to generate the harmony.bin binary (Do not program the binary)
Open the bootloader project bootloader_serial_flash/firmware/sam_a5d2_xult.X in the IDE
Build the project to generate the harmony_bootloader.bin binary (Do not program the binary)
Download and unzip SAM-BA
Open the command prompt and change the current directory to <harmony3_path>/bootloader_apps_uart/deps/at91bootstrap_binaries_sam_a5d2_xult/qspi_flash/ and run the below command
<sam-ba_path>/sam-ba.exe -p serial -b sama5d2-xplained -t 5 -a qspiflash -c erase::0x40000 -c writeboot:boot.bin
Change the current directory to <harmony3_path>/bootloader_apps_uart/apps/mpu_uart_bootloader/bootloader_serial_flash/firmware/sam_a5d2_xult.X/dist/sam_a5d2_xult/production/ and run the below command
<sam-ba_path>/sam-ba.exe -p serial -b sama5d2-xplained -t 5 -a qspiflash -c erase:0x40000:0xa0000 -c write:harmony_bootloader.bin:0x40000
Reset or Power cycle the device. GREEN LED will be turned-on to indicate that harmony bootloader code is running on the target
Run the btl_host.py from command prompt to program the application binary
python <harmony3_path>/bootloader/tools/btl_host.py -v -i <COM PORT> -d sama5 -p 256 -f <harmony3_path>/bootloader_apps_uart/apps/mpu_uart_bootloader/test_app/firmware/sam_a5d2_xult.X/dist/sam_a5d2_xult/production/harmony.bin
Following snapshot shows output of successfully programming the test application
Rebooting and Reboot Done messages in below output signifies that bootloading is successful
If above step is successful then the GREEN LED should start blinking
Open the Terminal application (Ex.:Tera Term) on the computer
Configure the serial port settings as follows:
Baud : 115200
Data : 8 Bits
Parity : None
Stop : 1 Bit
Flow Control : None
Reset or Power cycle the device
GREEN LED should start blinking and you should see below output on the console
Press and hold the Switch PB_USER and then press Reset button or Power cycle the device to force trigger bootloader at startup
Repeat Steps 9-15 once
This step is to verify whether bootloader is triggered by switch press at reset
