1.3.6 CSTR Bit Is Not Cleared after Bus Time-Out

When the module is operating in Client mode and TOREC = 1, and a bus time-out occurs during clock stretching, the CSTR bit will not be cleared, and the module continues to clock stretch and hang the bus.

Work around

Reset the I²C module by toggling the EN bit.
