2 Topology Selection Process

These metrics were considered at the start of the project to select overall system architecture, including primary and secondary side topologies:

  • Component count and price
  • EMI/ Filtering requirements
  • Complexity and cost of magnetic components
  • Power density
  • Peak efficiency vs overall system efficiency for wide input voltage range
  • Special requirements: High voltage, high current and isolation for safety
  • Soft-switching operation (Zero-Voltage and Zero-Current switching)
  • Snubber requirements
  • Suitability for application and operating profile. For example, battery charging requires voltage and current control (CV, CC operation).
  • Requirements for bidirectionality
  • Control complexity and control output requirements
  • Fixed vs Variable frequency operation
  • Multiphase and current sharing for parallel operation
