3.4 Power Capabilities

The MCP16701 offers a scalable and modular power architecture. Power stages can be added or removed to meet specific system requirements, enhancing power delivery, efficiency and thermal management—making the device ideal for high-performance FPGA and compute-intensive applications.

The eight 1.5A Buck regulators can operate independently or in parallel (in groups of up to four) to support higher output currents. The paralleling technique leverages the matched resistance of the power switches, eliminating the need for an additional current-sharing loop. This reduces both component count and solution footprint, as all parallel channels share a single inductor, maintaining the same magnetic volume as equivalent multi-phase architectures. With the recommended layout, up to four channels can be paralleled, delivering a total output current of up to 6A.
