PCB Area Reduction

The SAMA5D2 SIP provides important advantages with respect to circuit board layout by reducing the number of components, optimizing the number of PCB layers and simplifying the layout. This can be illustrated by comparing two PCBs.

The figure below shows scaled pictures for PCB area comparison between the SAMA5D2 SIP and the SAMA5D2 device with one DDR3L:

Figure 1. Surface Comparison of SAMA5D2 SIP with SAMA5D2 and One DDR3L
Table 1. PCB Area Comparison
Component Dimensions (mm) Approximate Area (mm2)
SIP ATSAMA5D27C-D1G 14 x 14 196
SAMA5D2 with one DDR3L 36 x 17 612

The difference between the SAMA5D2 SIP and the SAMA5D2 with DDR3L is more than 400mm². In space-constrained applications, such as wearables, this makes a significant difference.

As an example, the SAMA5D27-SOM1 that integrates the SIP, occupies 1500mm2 of PCB area. Without this SIP advantage, the SOM would have been about 1900mm2 or 26% more.
