4.1 Communication Speed

The communication speed in the application causes unwanted disturbances. High data rates used for bus systems especially influence the spectral purity. A proper tradeoff between pros and cons of high interface communication speed must be defined for each application. Regarding communication, speed covers two different types. On the one hand, an application can have wired communication channels, and on the other hand, it can have wireless communication links. The pros and cons differ depending on which type of interface is discussed. The following table provides an overview of the pros and cons of high data rates sorted by wired and wireless interfaces.

Table 4-1. Interface Characteristics
Interface Pros Cons
Wired
  • Faster reaction time
  • More radiated emission
Wireless
  • Reduced channel assignment time
  • Reduced power consumption
  • More unwanted emissions
  • Additional filtering required
  • Reduced link budget
The following practices are a common way to reduce the influences on other systems:
  • Reduce the slope of the edges
  • Shielding of high speed interfaces
