2.2 Thread Device Types

Thread devices are classified into two main categories:

1. Full Thread Device (FTD)

   • Keeps its radio on continuously
   • Can route messages for other devices
   • Maintains a full routing table
   • Can function as a Router, Leader, or Border Router
   • Typically requires mains power because of higher power consumption

2. Minimal Thread Device (MTD)

   • Keeps its radio off most of the time to support sleepy operation
   • Cannot route messages
   • Communicates through a parent router
   • Offers lower power consumption, making it suitable for battery-powered operation
   • Functions only as an End Device (Child)
