2.4 Role Promotions and Demotions in Thread Network

In a Thread network, nodes dynamically adjust their roles to maintain a stable, resilient topology. Devices can operate as Leaders, Routers, or End Devices. When network conditions change, such as node failures, degraded link quality, or increased network size, eligible devices can be promoted (for example, from End Device to Router) to support routing and maintain connectivity.

Conversely, devices can be demoted (for example, from Router to End Device) to improve network efficiency and reduce overhead when fewer routing nodes are required. This adaptive mechanism helps ensure load balancing, fault tolerance, and efficient use of network resources without manual intervention.
