2.1.3 External Input to the Signal Routing Port Pin

The PORTWINx register has an option for the user to choose a hardwired physical I/O pin (typically RCn pin) as an input source to the RWn signal routing port pin. This creates an opportunity for the signal routing port pin to receive an external signal (like a sensor or a button) from the physical world. This is analogous to a regular I/O port with output drivers disabled (TRISx = 1) and digital input buffers enabled (ANSELx = 0).

In addition to the hardwired physical I/O pin, some devices also have the provision to configure a PPS input through the PORTWINxPPS registers to connect to a physical I/O pin. Refer to the device data sheet for more information.
