When protocol conversion is enabled by configuring the Protocol Converter (PROTCONV) bit field in the Control G (USARTn.CTRLG) register, this register holds the bit value for a "zero character". If the bit to be transmitted is ‘0’ it is replaced with this character. The number of bits used for encoding and decoding is defined by the Character Size (CHSIZE) bit field in the Control D (USARTn.CTRLD) register. Note that 9-bit character size is not supported for protocol conversion.

When IrDA Encoding (ENC) is enabled in the Control G (USARTn.CTRLG) register, this register sets the pulse modulation scheme for the transmitter. If the register value is set to ‘0’, 3/16 of the baud rate period pulse modulation is used. Setting the value from 0x01 to 0xFE provide a fixed pulse length coding, with 8-bit value sets the number of system clock periods for the pulse. The start of the pulse will be synchronized with the rising edge of the baud rate clock. Setting the value to 0xFF disables pulse coding, allowing the RX and TX signals to pass through the IRCOM module unaltered.

AUXDATA0 must be configured before setting the Transmitter Enable (TXEN) or Receivere Enable (RXEN) bits in the Control B (USARTn.CTRLB) register.
