Reading the STATUSB register returns the peripheral write protection status:

Important: For SAM
        L11 Non-Secure accesses, read accesses (R*) are allowed only if the
            peripheral security attribution for the corresponding peripheral is set as Non-Secured
            in the NONSECx register.
